Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that a skilled dental surgeon places in your jawbone. Over the course of several months, your jawbone naturally bonds with the dental implants. This process is called osseointegration, and it’s why implants can remain stable and in place for the rest of your life.

Whether you need to replace one tooth or several, dental implants provide an option that lets you feel like you have all of your natural teeth. You can speak clearly, eat without restriction, and use the regular force of your bite.

What are my options for dental implants?

There are several different options for dental implants, and whether you’re a good candidate for implant placement depends on your overall health and treatment goals. Some people need only a single implant, while others require several, depending on the number of teeth they plan on replacing.

Your options at Capital Region Periodontics and Dental Implants include:

Teeth-in-an-hour™

Teeth-in-an-hour is a time- and cost-effective type of implant. You can get fully functional teeth on dental implants in just one surgery with no second round of incisions necessary. The surgery is computer-guided and precise.

All-on-Four®

All-on-Four is an option for replacing a whole arch of teeth with dentures. Rather than using one implant per tooth, the All-on-Four technique requires only four implants to support the whole set. Depending on your specific situation, your doctor may recommend additional implants to retain your denture.

Implant-supported overdentures

Implant-supported overdentures allow you to enjoy the stability of dental implants with the convenient removability of dentures. Your denture attaches to multiple implants in your jaw through a bar or clasps. This option can reduce the need for bone grafting.

What happens before I get dental implants?

The planning process for dental implants takes time and often takes place over multiple appointments. The team will first make sure you’re a candidate for dental implants by welcoming you in for a consultation, including an exam and dental X-rays.

They will evaluate the health of your jawbone with three-dimensional imaging and may inform you of the necessity of bone grafting before the implant procedure.

The team will also plan your dental implant based on images and impressions of the original tooth if it’s still there. They will make sure the new crown matches the rest of your teeth in size and color.
