LANAP Laser Dentistry Q & A

What is LANAP laser dentistry?

Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) laser dentistry is an alternative option for the treatment of gum disease that uses focused laser light instead of a scalpel to remove diseased and infected gum tissue.

LANAP is so precise because the laser targets those pigmented (dark or red) bacteria which cause gum disease. Diseased tissue contains high levels of these bacteria, allowing the laser light to kill the bacteria without it being absorbed by the surrounding tissue. The laser can sterilize the root surface allowing reattachment of the gum tissue to the root. With such clean results, it’s also easier for tissues to regenerate around your teeth and provide a healthy base of gum tissue to support your teeth.

The energy from the laser can also stimulate the healing of nearby healthy tissue, which leads to an easier post-operative period than traditional gum surgery. Because of the quick healing and precision, most patients will not develop gum disease in the same area after treatment as long as they practice diligent oral hygiene and regular maintenance visits.

What are the benefits of LANAP laser dentistry?

LANAP laser dentistry simplifies and accelerates dental surgical procedures that otherwise have long healing times with risks of severe pain and swelling. Due to its precision, you have a much lower risk of side effects with LANAP laser dentistry. Some of the advantages of laser surgery compared with traditional gum surgery are:

  • No scalpels
  • No sutures
  • Minimal pain
  • Shorter recovery
  • Less bleeding
  • Lower infection risk
  • More precision

How should I care for my gums after LANAP laser dentistry?

You should take a few steps to ensure the best results after LANAP laser dentistry at Capital Region Periodontics and Dental Implants. The team will discuss these instructions with you ahead of time to make sure you understand them and are prepared for the recovery period.

To support healthy tissue healing and a swift recovery, the team at Capital Region Periodontics and Dental Implants recommends that you:

  • Reduce physical activity
  • Use antimicrobial and antibiotic products and medications as directed
  • Keep a soft diet for the first two weeks
  • Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed to reduce pain
  • Rinse gently three times daily with the prescribed mouth rinse
  • Avoid placing pressure on the treatment areas

You may see some discoloration on your gums as they heal. This is normal and not a cause for concern. The team lets you know if they want to see you for a follow-up and encourages you to call with any questions or concerns.
