What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental issue calls for an emergency dental visit, but some absolutely do. Generally speaking, a dental emergency involves severe pain, active bleeding, sudden tooth damage, or signs of a spreading infection. If you aren’t sure whether what you’re feeling qualifies, please call us. We would much rather answer the question than have you sit at home wondering.

Situations that commonly bring patients to us for immediate care include:

  • Severe toothache — particularly a major toothache that keeps you awake at night or doesn’t ease with over-the-counter pain relief
  • Knocked out tooth, where the tooth completely displaces from its socket
  • Broken tooth, chipped tooth, or cracked tooth, including a tooth fracture deep enough to expose the inner layers
  • Dislodged tooth that has been pushed loose but remains partially in place
  • Dental abscess, a pocket of infection caused by bacteria, often accompanied by swollen gums and facial swelling
  • A lost dental filling, dental crown, or dental bridge that leaves a damaged tooth exposed
  • An impacted wisdom tooth causing pressure, swelling, or infection
  • Injury to the soft tissues surrounding your teeth — the lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums

When a Sudden Toothache Signals Something More

Sometimes a sudden toothache occurs spontaneously, with no injury behind it at all. When pain arrives out of nowhere, it often points to severe decay that has reached the tooth root, a bacterial infection at the base of the tooth, or inflammation in the surrounding bone and gum tissue.

This is not the kind of problem that resolves on its own. An infected tooth left untreated can lead to the infection spreading into the jaw, the sinuses, or beyond — which is exactly why we encourage patients to call at the first sign of trouble rather than waiting to see if it passes. Even moderate discomfort that lingers for more than a day or two is worth a phone call.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dental Care

What should I do if my tooth is knocked out?

Handle the tooth by the crown, never by the tooth root, since the root surface carries cells needed for reattachment. If it's dirty, rinse it briefly with water without scrubbing. If you can, place it back in the socket; if not, keep it in milk or in your own saliva. Then call our office immediately. A knocked out tooth has the best chance of being saved when it's treated within the first hour.

How can I manage pain until I get to your office?

A cold compress held against the outside of the cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time helps with both pain and swelling. Rinsing gently with warm salt water can soothe irritated soft tissues. Please don't place aspirin directly against the gums — it burns the tissue rather than helping. Over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed on the label is generally appropriate while you wait.

Will I need an extraction for an impacted wisdom tooth?

Not always. Some wisdom teeth remain impacted without causing trouble. But when an impacted wisdom tooth brings on pain, swelling, or repeated infection, professional extraction is often the recommendation. We'll evaluate the position of the tooth and talk through what makes sense for your situation.
